2008
This was a project I created while I was completing my bachelor's degree at Texas State University. This was one of my first book designs, and I'm still pretty proud of it.
The prompt was this: Come up with a fictional museum exhibition and make a book that would accompany it. I chose to create a book around an exhibition of the photographs of Edward Curtis. Curtis was a photographer in the early 1900's and he is mostly known for his work documenting Native American tribes and groups.
I used photographs, written content, and indigenous symbols from some of Curtis' own publications. Many of these photographs were originally published in bound leather books and sold to more wealthy Americans.
My book is divided into regions, highlighting specific tribes along the way, showing small details contrasted with large-scale portraits. As subtly illustrated on the cover, this is not specifically a book about the tribes themselves, but more about the tribes through the eyes of Edward Curtis.
