Here’s what we’ve been up to on our nice Christmas holiday.

Does popularity equal profit?

With all the online venues to communicate (Twitter, Facebook, Dribbble, Instagram, etc.) it’s tempting, as a designer, to feel the need to participate and participate often. The inclination is to spend a lot of time online, building your community of followers. Many people do. It almost feels like we’re expected to maintain a continual online presence. The reason I feel that this is so tempting is that, well, there are folks who are “popular” online and it seems like they’re “successful.”

You’re reading this on a blog, for Pete’s sake, so I’m definitely in the midst of this dilemma, but I have my doubts that it’s true.

Many people do this, though, and it seems like they are spending a considerable amount of time on it. So, for those of you involved or aware, I have these questions:

Does a continual online presence get you clients or only designery followers?

I would guess the latter because that’s what it looks like to me, but I’d like to be proven wrong.

Does online popularity actually translate into profit?

Not that everything is about profit, but does it actually improve your client base or the number of jobs that come in?

Finally, is the time spent online worth it?

Again, I don’t know the answer and truthfully, I doubt that it is.

I’m constantly torn between the worlds of life on the computer and life before my eyes. In my gut, I feel that the true value will always lie with life in the physical world, but I can’t deny that I’m often caught up in the desire to gain a following online. And so, to you “online followers,” let me know what you think.

New site, among other things.

So, finally, here’s the new site. I have a difficult time keeping a site for very long because I always seem to get tired of it quickly. Hopefully that won’t happen with this one. I went through many revisions that I thought were final along the way and I’m really happy with what I’ve got now.

Here are a couple of things that have happened recently, just to give you a little taste.

My First Dribbble

So now I’m on Dribbble. If you’re not familiar, Dribbble is an online community where designers can share things that they’re currently working on and get feedback.

Austin Stone Website Launch

The long-awaited new Austin Stone website has finally reached the surface. Phase One is alive and kicking. Phase Two holds some more fun things too though, so keep an eye out.
